8 Lessons to Bring to 2018

It’s been a while since I’ve written on here, but with the year coming to a close I figured now is a good time to come back and reflect on what I learned over the year. The following are eight lessons I am bringing into the year 2018:

  1. Forgive – forgive and move on. Even if you didn’t receive an apology.  When you hold on to resentments or anger you are essentially placing yourself in the role of a daily victim. The greatest lessons and events have reiterated that being happy trumps being right.
  2. Don’t be afraid to cut ties or distance yourself. Some people repeat the same patterns and consequently you end up having the same tiring conversations with nothing changing. It’s ok to stop wasting your own energy on someone who is making no efforts to change.
  3. You get what you perceive you deserve. Have the confidence that you deserve the world and your actions will follow. How you portray and respect yourself is how others in return will treat you.
  4. Focus on giving without expecting anything in return. This year I began volunteering my time as well as even giving more to my friends and family. In return, I feel better about how I use my time and have strengthened my relationships with everyone around me.
  5. Patience. This includes being patient with my friends who seem to have no time managment but also being patient with myself and where my life is going. Take everything one moment at a time and remember that process creates events that others see as luck.
  6. Be happy with what you have while working for what you want.
  7. Think big. A few years ago I told my mom my goals and she replied, “those are mediocre think bigger.” I recall feeling offended but I realized those goals were easily attainable and once I got them I didn’t know what I wanted next. So my advice is to think huge because the quote, “Shoot for the moon, even if you miss it you will land among the stars.” is on point.
  8. Surround yourself with inspiration. For me, this meant unfollowing gossip accounts, celebrity entertainment or even just IG accounts that I found to post crude images. Instead of getting caught up by irrelevant information and people I reorganized my desk, apartment and social media to inspire me to do better.

Every year during these twenty-somethings I continue to learn about  life and how to properly handle myself and situations. These are just a few things I’ve learned and I’m excited to see what lessons the new year brings.

  1. I love lessons number 8! Inspiration is a big thing for me personally and I love the way you put it, simply yet to the point: get rid of the negative and surround yourself with the positive. I’m a big sucker for reality TV but I’ve noticed that at the end of the day it doesn’t do anything for me, so in 2018 I’m limiting it to three shows and that’s it! Again, awesome post and can’t wait to read more!
